Is 2017 the Year that You Should Retire?

On 12, Jan 2017 | No Comments | In Blog | By Ron Greenwald

It is a dream for many people to retire early, but this choice is a big decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Are you ready to make the transition from the workplace to a relaxed retirement lifestyle? Here are a few signs that 2017 might be the year that you should step away from your career:

You Can Afford to Retire

Have you built a financial portfolio that provides a big enough budget to support the retirement lifestyle that you desire?  You are 65 today.  Will your financial portfolio be able to outlast 35 years of lifestyle choices, healthcare needs, charitable intent, and unforeseen family obligations?

You Are Ready to Stop Working

Do you find it hard to get out of bed in the morning, because you don’t want to face another day at the office? If you have built the financial war chest for retirement but you are still working because that’s what you are “supposed to do,” then it might be time to step away and enjoy retirement a little early.

You are Out of Debt

Debt payments can have a negative impact on your retirement checks. If you are loaded with a big mortgage or a lot of credit card debt, then you might consider the option to continue working so that you can pay off the debt before retirement. Lowering your expenses is an important step to ensure that you are ready to retire.

Your Passion Lies in …..Fill in the Blank

Given the above that you can afford to retire with in depth analysis of your cash flow projected out many more years then you anticipate, is it now time to 1: volunteer time to a charitable organization? 2: start a business? 3. Mentor students?  4. Spending time with family? If you answer yes to any of the above, then it may be time to consider retirement.

If you are considering retirement this year, then it is essential that you look at the way your mortgage is impacting your monthly cash flow. “Rightsizing” your home can be a great solution to get you positioned, so that you can leave your job.
