New Year’s Health Goals – Making Your Resolutions Stick
Have you started January with the best of intentions so that you can make this year better than ever before? New Year’s resolutions offer a great opportunity to assess your current health and make the changes that are needed to boost your overall wellness. Even if you start on the right foot, it is common to slip back into old habits within a few weeks.
Whether you want to lose a few pounds or you are looking to improve your strength and flexibility for an upcoming golf tournament, it is essential that you take a proactive approach to your health. Here are a few tips that you can follow to stay consistent with your resolutions:
Sometimes, it can feel overwhelming to make big changes all at once. Instead of trying to transform multiple areas in your life, look for small steps that you can take that will add up to bigger results. For example, if you would like to lose weight, then start your efforts in January by cutting out dessert during the week. In February, add in light exercise three times a week. In March, increase your water consumption.
These changes might seem small, but the combined efforts can add up over time. Find the baby steps that are needed in your life, and put together a plan so that you can start implementing these things for the future.
Talk to a Friend
Accountability can be an effective way to stay on the path of reaching your goals. Tell a friend about the action steps that you will be taking, and report back each week about the progress that has been made. If you need to, setup a reward or consequence that will be used based on your consistency with your efforts.
Find Your “Why”
It is hard to stay consistent with a new habit if you don’t feel a deep, burning motivation to change. Identify the reason why you want to make this change, and use this reason to fuel your efforts. For example, if you want to lose weight before your upcoming vacation, then tape a picture of the cruise ship on your fridge to remind you why you need to stay consistent with your efforts each day.
