Rethink Home… Home Safety Checkup for Aging Adults

On 07, Apr 2016 | No Comments | In Blog | By Ron Greenwald

Do you have friends, loved ones, or clients who are aging adults? It is a good idea to look for ways to support them in their homes. There are a few methods that can be used to improve home safety for aging adults, such as a home safety checkup. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

What is a Home Safety Checkup?

Many aging adults are injured in their homes each year. But, many times these injuries could have been avoided with the right preventive steps at home. The main cause of injury at home is falling, especially when people are over the age of 75.

Even though the home might seem to be safe at first appearances, there are a few things that you need to look for. In fact, these common hazards are often overlooked. Scheduling a home safety checkup is a great way to spot potential hazards in order to reduce the risk of injury in the future.

Common Causes of Home Injury

These are a few hazards that are easy to spot and easy to fix:

  • Have smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors installed
  • Remove objects in walkways, such as rugs and furniture
  • Place slip-resistant mats in the bathrooms and kitchen
  • Install hand rails in the hallways and bathrooms if needed
  • Provide several fire extinguishers in easy-to-reach locations
  • Set the water heater temperature to a maximum of 120 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent burns

Some of these steps are designed to help the household members prepare in case of an emergency. Other items on the home safety checklist will reduce the likelihood of an accident during everyday activities.

In some situations, it might be best for the aging adult to move to another home that is more suited to their physical capabilities.
