Rethink Home… Talking to Today’s 70 Year Old

On 28, Apr 2016 | No Comments | In Blog | By Ron Greenwald

Times have changed, and it is essential that you are careful with your conversations to ensure that you are showing the proper levels of respect for other people. If you are in an industry that offers services for people in the later stages of life, then you should consider their background and history to determine the right topics of conversation.

Unique Considerations for 70 Year Olds

When a person reaches their seventies, they are often starting to slow down, which necessitates a lifestyle change. Hobbies and activities change during this stage of life, and many people are looking for ways to maximize the time that they can spend with their family.

It is common for 70 year olds to continue maintaining an independent lifestyle, although some people might have need of assistance if they are having health problems. Even if a person is capable of independence, it is still essential to consider their living situation. For example, there are many times when it is best to have the person move into a small home with main floor living amenities, because it will be easier for them to get around the house.

Preparing for the Future

Since the person will be approaching days of limited mobility and declining health in the future, it is a good idea to begin the preparations right away so they are ready for these changes. For example, it is essential that they are maintaining good daily habits to protect their health, such a following a healthy diet and maintaining regular exercise.

Preparing their home for these future changes is one of the biggest tasks that will need to be faced. Some people can make adjustments to their home to make it easier to get around. But, others will need to move to a different property in order to accommodate their needs.

As you are talking with clients and friends who are in their seventies, it is a good idea to encourage them to take a proactive approach to prepare for the future. These activities right now can make a big difference as they continue into their 80’s and 90’s.
