Retirement Community or Staying in Place

On 09, Jun 2016 | No Comments | In Blog | By Ron Greenwald

Today, there are as many varied and unique retirement communities as there are coffee concoctions at Starbucks™. What is your preconceived vision of today’s retirement community? Do you picture yourself on a cruise ship in dry dock where your responsibilities are to have fun, socialize, meet new people, eat regularly and healthy, play games….all sorts? Is a retirement community the right choice for you? Certainly, the vast majority of people wish to stay in their home. The home is where the heart is and carries with the lifetime of memories.

Not your Parent’s/Grandparent’s Nursing Home

Today, the newer senior communities are designed to maximize the quality of life experiences. Go kick their tires….  When you buy a new car, you go test drive maybe 3 to 4 to 6 or more different models. When you buy the watermelon at the grocery store, you tap on several of them before placing it in the shopping cart. Do the same with a senior community. Take each community for a test drive by eating their food, meeting their staff, and talking to the residents.

The One Year Renewable Plan

Every year, you start with the one year renewable plan. For the next 365 days while you stay in your home, you have the following priorities. 1. Safety and security in your own home.  You will make home modifications to prevent falls, minimize accidents, ensure healthy living style, and secure your safety. 2. You will visit a senior community once a quarter for that test drive.  3. Once a week, you will utilize services for transportation other than you driving yourself. Take a look at www.gogograndparent.com .  If and when the time may come that moving to a senior community is the right thing to do, you will be fully prepared  to make a great choice.
