Did you know that Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia? Luckily, researchers are finding new solutions that will support brain health at all ages. By applying these principles in your life, you can reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s and support family members who might be at risk.
Middle Age: The Best Time to Support Activity in the Frontal Lobe
According to Beverly Sanborn, LCSW, Gerontologist and Vice President of Program Development for Belmont Village Senior Living, the prevention process should begin at least 20 – 25 years before you have a symptom. So, middle-age is the best time to start caring for your mental health by increasing activity in the frontal lobe.
Researchers have found that the best way to support and strengthen the frontal lobe is by being in a group of people. It requires organizing your thinking and describing what you are thinking to another person. Another option is to write your thoughts if you want to work on brain health when you don’t have someone else to talk to at the time.
Another exercise to increase the use of your frontal lobe is to force yourself not to use clichés. Instead of using a general term, such as “awesome,” try to find clever, interesting words to describe the things that you would like to communicate.
Whole-Brain Program for Alzheimer’s Patients
Instead of simply addressing symptoms, Beverly Sanborn has been involved in a whole-brain program that supports patients in maximizing mental health. The programs have been designed to match research, and they are constantly evolving as new information comes available. This well-rounded approach helps with not only with the brain but also with social life and overall well-being. This treatment program can be helpful for people in both the mild and moderate stages of dementia.
