On 26, May 2016 | No Comments | In Blog | By Ron Greenwald

1 in 3…1 in 5…$214 Billion a Year….  1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer or Dementia; 1 in 5 Medicare dollars are spent on Alzheimer’s; $214 billion dollars a year spent on the disease  (Facts and Statistics posted on the Alzheimer San Diego web site www.alzsd.org)

What is your role?

Do you have the disease?  Are you a caregiver for someone with Dementia?  Are you the professional working with the family?  Are you the professional working directly with the person inflicted with Dementia?  Are you a family member relying on others to take care of your loved one?   If you have answered yes to any of the above questions, then you face a decision on how to proceed to make the best from a very grave and debilitating disease.  It is easy to write but hard to implement what is the obvious.  Take charge of your particular situation by getting help, guidance, and support.  Reach out to the various Alzheimer and Dementia support teams and groups in your locale.

Impact of Dementia

Obviously, this disease severely impacts the psychological, social, and emotional health of the patient.  Just as important is the toll the disease will have on the folks that surround the patient.   The emotional wear on loved ones is overwhelming.

Supporting Someone with Dementia

Even though it might be hard to interact with someone with dementia, it is essential to make sure that they have the necessary support. Family members should stay involved to maintain the relationship throughout the years. It is also important to maintain the support of financial advisors and other professionals who can offer assistance.

The best thing that can be done is to put together a plan based on their individual needs. In some situations, it might make sense to have the person live in a retirement community, and there are many details that need to be handled to make this transition. For example, it is necessary to take care of their home so that they can move into a different community.
