The Health Checkup for Aging Adult

On 12, May 2016 | No Comments | In Blog | By Ron Greenwald

Maintaining good health is the priority.  What do you need to know about helping aging adults and their medical care?  When you call your Mom and/or Dad to inquire how they are feeling, what do they say in response?  “All is fine, a few aches and pains but that comes with age.  Do not worry about me, I am doing fine.”  When your aging adult makes a doctor visit, what does your parent/grandparent say in response to the nurse’s question about how they are feeling?  The response more often than not is: “Feeling fine – a few aches and pains that come with age.”

What Can You Do to Help a Senior with Their Healthy Living

Go with your loved one to their doctor’s appointment.  Be sure you have the right documentation that will allow you to be privy to the information.  Get prepared.  Have questions to ask. Have a pre meeting with your loved one as to what you want to ask the doctor.  Bring the pill box and educate the doctor as to the medications your aging adult is taking each and every day.  Your loved one may and will resist at first but when the lines of communications start to open with the doctor, you and your aging adult, the flood gates will open wide.

The Need for Advocacy

Doctors, nurses, and medical staff are by and large doing the best they can to “fix” what ails a human being.  The medical profession is overwhelmed trying to bring into light the personalized care that focuses on the individual….their wants, wishes, needs, and desires.

The result is all too often that there is no communication between an aging loved one and their doctor.  The aging adult does not know the questions to ask the doctor.  The doctor does not know their patient other then the chart and prescriptions.  Think about having an advocate in your loved ones court that is called an Aging Life Care specialist.  One who will go to bat for you and your loved one.  Who is going to challenge the physician as to their dosage and interaction of drugs?   Who is going to navigate the insurance claims and billing?  Who is going to know the right forms and procedures put forth by the government and the hospital?  Go to www.aginglifecare.org to see if this is the advocacy course of action you should explore for your parent/grandparent.

In addition to having the right advocacy for your health care, it is a good idea to consider their complete financial picture and living space.  Here at Greeneald & Gerke Realtors, we specialize in real estate services for aging adults.  Our team will assist with the transition to a retirement community or a better living situation, to ensure your Best Quality of Life.  For more information about how we can work together, we invite you to call us today: (844) 782-9674
