San Diego Deputy DA, Paul Greenwood, Speaks Out on Elder Abuse

On 08, Feb 2017 | No Comments | In Blog | By Ron Greenwald

Technology is an amazing tool to help people of all ages maximize their lifestyle. Facetime, Skype, and other tools can keep families connected from anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, with technology comes the risk of elder abuse, which is a growing concern across the nation.

You shouldn’t be afraid to use today’s technology and the internet, but you do need to be careful.  We all seem to know at least one person that has been the target of an online scam.  Don’t let yourself be one of the victims!

Here is some eye opening information from Paul Greenwood, Deputy District Attorney from San Diego, that can help you to protect yourself and your family:

Isolation is a Risk Factor

When aging adults have children involved, the risk of being scammed goes down. If children abandon their responsibilities and leave their parents isolated, then it increases the likelihood that predators will target that individual.

For example, one common scam is for the predator to pretend to be a family member in trouble. The predator might call the victim and claim that their grandson is in jail, requesting the victim to send money to help. If an aging adult is isolated from their family, then they have a higher risk of falling for the scam. Other common scams include people who claim to be calling from the IRS or a fake jury duty request.

Educating Against Common Scams

Even though government agencies are working hard to stop the scammers, individuals need to take a proactive approach to staying educated about current scams. By learning about the signs of a scam, you can watch and listen for warnings.

Most scams are initiated over the telephone, so you should always be cautious if someone that you don’t know is calling to request information or money. Another common sign is that something is going to happen to yourself or a family member if you don’t take action right away. Seniors often fall for these conversations because the person on the other end of the line claims to be someone in a position of authority.

Here at Greenwald &Gerke Realtors, we know that choosing the right living situation can minimize the risk of your family members. If you have family nearby, then there is always support available to help you learn to identify these common scams.
