Time Off Work: Helping Caregiving Employees to Maximize Their Schedule

On 19, Jan 2017 | No Comments | In Blog | By Ron Greenwald

Many managers and Human Resources professionals try hard to understand the difficulties that are faced by caregiving employees.  When HR’s hands may be tied by their Company’s policies and employees have limited days that they can be away from the office and still get paid, then it is common for the employee to use their personal days when they need to be home with a family member in need.

Employee satisfaction is essential to the success of any organization.  Is your company moving to flexible time-off policies in an attempt to accommodate the personal needs of each employee?  By helping employees find the balance between work and home, it is common for companies to see an increase in productivity and revenue.

Providing Options for Your Employees

The best thing that you can do is provide options to help your employees work around their schedules at home. For example, you might consider offering flex-time that can be used instead of paid time off. If an employee needs to adjust their hours to care for a family member at home, then they can shorten their work day and make up the hours on another day.

Another option that could be offered is flexibility with the use of Paid Time Off. Instead of requiring employees to use a full day of PTO, give them the option to use it in half-day or hourly increments.

Offering Work-from-Home Opportunities

We live in a digital world, making it easier than ever for employees to work from home. Are you in a business that allows some of the work duties to be completed online? Then you might offer the opportunity for a caregiving employee to work from home for a portion of their work hours. This situation decreases the back-and-forth driving from home to the office, allowing the person to dedicate more time to their family member and work projects.

When employees can balance their schedule, then they won’t be spending time at work worried about the things that are going on at home. As a result, they are better prepared to fully dedicate their thoughts and efforts to the work projects, which helps to boost productivity each day.
